The Farmer

Meet Farmer Keith (Keith Jefferson Smith)

Hailing from the West Country, Keith is a true Devonian and typical Taurean.

The son of a serving member of the RAF, he enjoyed the time he was able to spend helping on his grandfather’s dairy farm near Plymouth. This influenced Keith at an early age as he decided to study agriculture and horticulture at Bicton College and Seale-Hayne.

After graduation, the following 2 years were spent gaining practical experience as an emergency relief herdsman/stockman/farm manager/tractor driver, travelling the length and

breadth of the UK.

A happy 17 years were then spent as a Lecturer in Agriculture in Buckinghamshire before moving to a beef and sheep farm in southern Scotland.

In 1995, on a matter of principle, the farm underwent

Biodynamic organic conversion and a small dairy herd of Jersey cows introduced, becoming the first commercial organic dairy farm in Scotland.

Subsequently an on-farm organic creamery under

Soil Association Certification was established, being the first in Scotland processing and selling organic liquid milk and other dairy products.

Soon after, in 2001 the Soil Association/Mail on Sunday awarded Keith the

Organic Food Award for Best Organic Dairy Product for milk.

In 2005 Farmer Keith expanded his passion for dairy farming by establishing established a dairy farm in Suffolk managed on sound organic principles but not seeking certification.
